Lead Epidemiologist, UKHSA
Dr Ruth Simmons is the lead epidemiologist within the hepatitis section of the Blood safety, Hepatitis, STIs and HIV division at the UK Health Security Agency, leading on the national surveillance of viral hepatitis. Ruth Simmons has a MSc in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD with the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit at University College London. She has honorary positions with UCL, University of Bristol and NHS England.
Prior to her PhD, Ruth was the lead scientist for the UK HIV and AIDS reporting system with specific interest in work to identify recent HIV infections and transmitted drug resistance. Ruth has extensive experience in the surveillance of BBVs, and research, has supported several public health responses including Covid-19, and acute non-A-E hepatitis among children, and is the co-applicant on a number of viral hepatitis research projects. Ruth continues to drive forward hepatitis surveillance activities and research and is supporting efforts to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat within the UK.
