Development of methods for monitoring HCV re-infection
Whilst individuals who clear HCV infection after treatment remain at risk of re-infection, current HCV incidence estimates cannot disaggregate new infections from re-infections, and no information is available about the timing of and risk factors for reinfection. We combined relevant existing UKHSA data sources to refine surveillance methods for monitoring reinfections. We investigated the role of molecular genetic sequencing for identifying reinfections and clusters and, with the Hepatitis C Trust, conducted qualitative research to understand the risk factors for reinfection.
The findings will support resource planning, local/national policymakers, commissioners and service providers.
