Assessing the burden and characterising blood-borne viruses (BBV) among underserved populations: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence review

Theme B

UK HBV prevalence estimates vary, but knowledge on the burden and characteristics of HBV in underserved populations is required to monitor trends in disease and develop/evaluate testing/diagnostic initiatives. We conducted a systematic review on HBV prevalence, generating prevalence estimates for the UK population, and contributing to DHSC PHOF targets for reducing liver cancer and premature mortality, and informing PHOF indicators for reducing liver disease, premature mortality and the overarching priority to tackle inequalities.

Findings will enhance prospective surveillance of hepatitis and its impacts. The data will also be used by DHSC, NHSE and UKHSA to monitor progress against global elimination targets.
