Laura’s PhD work explored genomic and phylo-epidemiological methods for surveillance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) diversity and antimicrobial resistance in the UK. More specifically, her work has utilised HCV genomic data generated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to evaluate a genomic fragment-based method for identifying transmission networks, to characterise novel HCV subtypes, understand real-world outcomes of direct acting antiviral treatment for treating endemic HCV subtypes in the UK and identify resistance associated substitutions in these subtypes, and finally to date the origin of clusters within an ongoing HCV outbreak and investigate the rates of transmission between locations.
