Understanding the contributors to depression and barriers to accessing treatment for this among older people with HIV in England

Theme C

People with HIV (PWH) are living longer, bringing the challenge of how to continue to improve the quality-of-life of an ageing population with a complex clinical condition. PWH are at increased risk of depression, which may affect their ability to take medication. There is no clear treatment pathway for depression among this population. Identification of the barriers to accessing health services for depression may suggest behavioural changes or other interventions which may result in improved outcomes.

Findings will support the development of guidelines/standards for the diagnosis and management of mental health problems and depression among PWH in the UK, and will enable the design of effective interventions to safeguard emotional and physical well-being in this population.
