We believe that lived experience is expertise, and people and communities impacted by research should have meaningful opportunities to influence what we are researching, how research is carried out, and how findings are shared.

That’s why we are launching the Involvement Network, to directly connect people and communities with opportunities to influence, guide and participate in our research via email.

‍How will the Involvement Network work?

We will share opportunities to get involved with our research to network members by email as they arise, similar to a newsletter or bulletin.

Examples of involvement activities that may be shared through the Network include:

  • Working together on the design and development of a research project;
  • Joining a research team to help carry out research projects;
  • Taking part in or leading workshops and discussions about our research;
  • Joining steering groups or advisory panels for specific projects;
  • Sharing research findings with the wider public and specific communities.

Each email will explain the opportunity, who it is aimed at, and how to apply. Opportunities will vary in their focus, time commitment, and eligibility criteria. If members are interested, they can apply themselves or share the opportunity with relevant contacts and networks who may be interested. Those selected to take part in an involvement opportunity will be compensated for their time, work and relevant expenses.

‍Who can join the Involvement Network?

We are looking for people who have an interest in applying for or sharing opportunities to be involved in our research on blood-borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections. We believe that lived experience is expertise, and no research experience is necessary. If you join, there is no obligation to apply for or share opportunities.

We want to make sure that opportunities shared through the Involvement Network reach a diverse range of people, groups, and community organisations, and are particularly interested in reaching communities whose voices have historically been underrepresented or excluded from research.

‍How can I join the Involvement Network?

Joining the Network is free, quick and open to everyone, both individuals and organisations.

If you have further questions or would like to discuss the Network, please contact our team at contact-hpru@ucl.ac.uk. We also welcome conversations with individuals or organisations that would like to explore how the network could work for their communities. This might include discussing how opportunities can be shared in accessible and appropriate ways, or how to make involvement as meaningful as possible.
